CORTADO is our home for seven months of the year. She is a 1973 Sedan 40′ Huckins – wood hull, cold-molded, which has been glassed-over. Huckins are special boats and this one is a gem.
We named her CORTADO after our favorite spanish coffee. It is a simple word that reminds us of the importance of taking time together and mid-day coffee is a favorite time of ours!
40′ has been a good size for our family of four. There is a forward v-berth cabin with shelving and two closets for the ‘master-suite’. Aft of this, is a small cabin with two bunk beds for the kids (over 6′ long) with side storage space and closet/compartments for clothes and toys. The boat is full of light and head-room.
Opposite the kids’ bunks is a head with vacuum-flush toilet, sink, shower and storage.
Up a few steps and you are in the bright and airy main salon. We have ample storage compartments for school books, kitchen items, games and we store wine, tools and other spare equipment down below. The galley is in the upper part of the main salon, over looking the aft cock-pit.
Outdoors, we have cushioned engine boxes, which are shaded, and lead to the open aft cockpit and stairs to the flybridge. The flybridge is large and seats about seven comfortably. Cortado has lots of outdoor space and we use every inch.
We have room for six sleepers (with two being al fresco on the cockpit beds).
Cortado can run at 27 knots, but we tend to cruise at a more comfortable 18 knots on long voyages. She has twin diesel Cummins engines and a Northern Lights 5kw generator. In 2015 we added a dinghy, PIPA to our fleet. She is an AB Inflatable 9′ Ultra Light with a 2015 Yamaha 6hp 4-stroke engine, using Weaver Davits on the swim platform for PIPA’s storage while underway.
This boat was built in 1973 in Jacksonville, Florida at the Huckins yard. The original owner called her “Step Two” and had her built to take trips to the Bahamas from the FL coast. When we bought her, she was named “Jennie Mac” and was lovingly cared for by a great family in Jacksonville.
In the past two years, we have updated all the systems and appliances. We have high standards for safety and comfort so needless to say, she is one happy boat.
CORTADO is a solid, well-built yacht and we cannot say enough about the Huckins brand. It is a real family, as anyone who owns one will attest!
Cortado is currently on the market for sale – we are looking to move into a larger Huckins as we would like a little more room for our BOOKS, art supplies and growing teens…
