We are finding that the homeschool we designed is altering the way our children learn. Our version of “homeschool” includes a component of travel uncommon in most school settings. Our children benefit from exploring different cultures and ways of life, which vary from year to year. Our kids are genuinely interested in what is happening around them on many levels, so the ‘want-to-know’ factor is prevalent. The result is that they are engaged in their own learning and see the immediate value of their knowledge. They are keen to learn and are therefore taking ownership of their education.
Our homeschool classification is Eclectic World Schooling.

(these photos are from “School, Fish and Racing Sailboats” blog post from January 2016)
We are passionate about travel and sharing creative learning adventures with our kids. Ten years ago, we were inspired to try something different. We did a heap of research, packed our bags with books and hope, and have not looked back. Loving what we do, and living a creative life are qualities that resonate with us. We are teaching on the go and yet learning as a team, and as a family. Usually, we spend approximately six-months on land, and six-months at sea. However, the pandemic has altered our travel schedule considerably.
We realize there are many types of home-schooling families. Though we don’t seem to fit into most categories, we have found. We are homeschooling, but mostly not at home. We are not running from a failed system; we are not overtly religious. We just want to travel, learn more about the world and educate our own curious children along the way. Initially, we called our program “Adventure School” and “Travel School.”
We originally chose the Calvert Homeschool model as a base, which worked very well for us in the beginning. However, we didn’t follow it to a “T” as we found a lot of the prescribed topics of learning were not congruent with the places we were traveling… for instance, why study US history in Europe? So we moved on to other programs and learned to cater our kids’ curriculums annually to fit our travels. We cover all the state-required subjects while studying European History in Europe, reading Cervantes in Spain, and Melville in the Bahamas, for example.
Over time we developed an eclectic approach to our curriculum, using courses from a variety of sources. Our curriculum for 2022-2023 includes the following:
International Studies, Geography
Economics
Chemistry with Lab
Spanish & French
Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry
Advanced Composition, Essays, Literary Analysis
International Debate and Model United Nations
American Art/Fine Arts Study
Music (Piano)
PE: Sailing, Baseball, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball
Community Service
In the early years, we did not have access to high-speed (or sometimes any speed at all) internet, so we were careful not to base our school time completely reliant on computer connections. Our “Adventure School” is a bit “old school.” We read a lot of books. Now that we are in our High School years, we use some online programs, including MrDMath, BraveWriter, and Westfield Academy. Our Spanish classes are 1:1 with a teacher in Guatemala via the Homeschool Spanish Academy as well as Chemistry, taught live online with a Professor in North Carolina.
We have discovered an unusual model for educating our children, which has blossomed above and beyond anything we could have expected. This plan is hard work, but it works very well for us all. We love what we are doing, and our children/teens are thriving!
Since Sophia graduated in June and is now in college, we have an interesting year planned for Oliver. He is a self-motivated, hard-working student, and will be fun to explore some new locales with him.
In this digital format, Tony and I chronicle our family adventures – exploring and learning as we go. Please subscribe to receive updates on our journey, and send us notes – we love feedback, and questions are welcome!
Thank you for reading – xx Lynne

“Leave the Dock and Good Things Happen.” Tony often says this – which applies to boats on every level – but also to life in general. Sometimes you just have to let loose the dock lines, and… go.
We love traveling, and sharing a life of experiential learning with our children has been more than fulfilling for the entire family. And so we have decided to continue this path for now… because we love it.
